Our dish gardens are shipped with a water-soluble solution on top of the decorative soil topping, creating a hard layer of small stones above the soil. After a little time and prodding, this layer will loosen.
Requires bright direct light and low water. Be sure to only water your cacti when the soil is completely dry. Use a chopstick to test soil for moisture and to help break apart the stones. The soil dressing will mean that it dries out slower than usual. Keep this in mind so you don't overwater.
